2016 mtb marathon in Pöllau, Austria

my first mtb marathon ever. 75 km and a climb of 2700 meters. Nervous, but prepared. checked my bike over and over again. I was sure to finish in 4 – 5 hours or so, felt mental and physical well suited for the challenge…

well, how wrong i was. I started way too fast, clinging on to riders who were much stronger than i am. ignoring the first signs of an upcoming cramp, i did what i could to keep up. it went well till my muscles cramped and i had to pause for a moment. and i had only covered 20 km and climbed 600 of the 2700 meters. that was when reality set in. i had gone too fast for too long. after my muscles relaxed a bit, i continued the race, but was nearly unable to climb any hill, however slight.

then, after 5 hours and still more than 20 km away from the finishline, rain and hail set in and the race was eventually terminated before i could finish.

a suttleservice retrieved the remaining mountainbikers me included, and brought us back to start/Finish. despite being exhausted, tired and did not finish the race, i was more than glad being part of something as wonderful as a mountainbike marathon. will definitely do another marathon. but in my own pace…
